The winds were out of the NW-NE today but the birds they were not to
be
seen. I do hope the Broad-wingeds make another grand appearance at
Smith
before too long. But we were kept entertained anyway. A total of
five
raptors were observed catching dragonflies, of which there were many:
a
Red-tailed and Red-shouldered hawk, Mississippi kites, kestrel, Merlin
and
Peregrine. Pretty neat. And one proud juv. Coop flew by carrying his
latest
capture... a pinecone. That was good for a laugh. For the second day we
were
visited by a local Chuck-will's widow, mid-afternoon no less. Yesterday
it
took off over Galveston Bay but hastily retreated to the woods on the
shoreline. Mas gavilanes to all and to all a good night.
