This series of photos is of a sharp-shinned hawk which appeared over the
watch on Sunday, October 1. The sequence shows an unusual loss of primaries
in one wing apparently doesn't affect this particular bird's ability to
fly and maneuver. It never missed a beat; it flapped and rose and turned
cleanly in the warm air as it passed overhead, despite the apparent loss
of its primaries on its left wing. The stills below don't appear to show
any translucent feathering in place ... the feathers are just simply not
there. We still don't know how the accipiter managed to fly so cleanly!
