Friday morning, September 29, 2000 at the Westlake remote site: After the prior evening's setdown we knew the liftoff would be spectacular. We weren't disappointed. Credit to the intrepid hawk watchers who passed the alert for morning liftoff ... the area packed with nearly fifty observers for the morning's show. It was another warm south Texas morning, and the broadies began lifting off in singles, doubles, then small groups ... finally forming larger and larger kettles and moving ever southward. Broadies that set down literally in back yards of residences gave good looks at they fought their way into the air from nearby roosts. Others could be seen perched in plain view on branches as they waited their signal to go. Joel and Art settled in for a day of counting at Westlake after the show ended.
Excerpt from daily log:
Sunday, October 1: For those wondering about the Westlake remote site ... traffic slowed considerably as the current broadwing push slowed. The 138,000+ day on Thursday at Westlake brought a Friday morning liftoff of 41,900. Saturday brought only several thousand. Liftoff this morning was only about 1,200 ... Bill and I manned the site tonight for set down but only logged in 102 raptors.
