November 10, 1999
Hi everyone, there was a light rough-legged hawk again today. It is
very
likely to be the same individual seen yesterday, although when I
compared
my notes it seems that they are different. However, the hawk today
was
closer and in a different light than the one yesterday. We (also Mike
Gremillion) got a very good look at all the field marks, the dark
carpal
patches, the white tail with black tip, the dihedral, the very dark
belly
(darker than upper breast), brown upperparts, and it hovered a few
times
over a nearby field. The end result is that the hawk was not counted
today, and I will be on the lookout for it should it hang around for
tomorrow. There was a very dense fog in the morning until about
11:00,
and then very few hawks. Today's count:
4 Northern Harrier
1 Sharp-shinned Hawk
3 Cooper's Hawk
1 Broad-winged Hawk
1 Red-tailed Hawk
10 Total Hawks
Until tomorrow,
Kyle McCarty
