Hazel Bazemore Hawk Watch, Fall 1999
Date:
Hi everyone,
Well, Joel recorded yet another land mark day! Here's his report:
--------------------
Our largest day ever for Turkey Vultures with hourly totals beginning
between 9 to 10 am of: 503, then 117, 777, 3676, 905, 1165, 1301, and 2039.
Busy all day with 15 species. The bird of the day came at 12:35 out of
the south. Fernando and I saw it at the same time and we both knew
immediately what it was, even with naked eye!! The bird was less than 200
feet overhead and proceeded at a leisurely pace to the north as we called
out it's field marks. It made a couple of leisurely turns to give us a
look at it's back (I'm in the scope by now) and to make things perfect a
resident White-tailed Hawk came to investigate and give us a comparison
with a Short-tailed Hawk!! This makes the 28th species of raptor recorded
this season.
