Hazel Bazemore Hawk Watch, Fall 1999
Date:   10-08-99

Hi everyone,

Some real action on the hill tonight! I'm once again posting on the fly tonight; my apologies; season-to-date numbers will be brought up to date after the weekend. In the meantime, check out Fernando and Ryan's day on the hill; wish I'd been there!

-----------------------

The day started with dark threatening skies and north winds, it cleared out in a couple of hours and we hoped for some good numbers. They never came. A possible dark morph juvenile Rough-legged Hawk was shot down by Joel as it was impossible for us to see the plumage in any detail. The size, shape, and the way it held its wings were right, we all agreed to put it down as a UB. A little after 4 pm we spotted a smaller raptor underneath a Turkey Vulture, everyone raised their binos and were rewarded with a Peregrine Falcon. Then all of a sudden the "vulture" made a dive for the falcon, this sent us scrambling for scopes. It turned out to be an adult Zone-tailed Hawk!!
