Hazel Bazemore Hawk Watch, Fall 1999
Date:   09-16-99

Greetings all:

That was a nice liftoff this morning; Joel says they were able to see thousands from the watch site. None were counted, of course, as they'd been pretty much logged in the evening before. Good day today, overall.

2.......Osprey
30......Mississippi Kite
1.......Northern Harrier
10......Sharp-shinned Hawk
10......Cooper's Hawk
15,966..Broad-winged Hawk
3.......Red-tailed Hawk (one was a dark morph)
3.......Peregrine Falcon
3.......Prairie Falcon
1.......Unidentified Accipiter
10......Unidentified Raptor

Total:  16,039

--------------------

Duluth tallied a total of 46,000 broadwings for Sept. 15th (yesterday). Today's count hasn't been sent yet, but a check at noon showed 5,000 more had already passed through the watch for today. A big hug and thank you to Laurie Erickson for taking time out to pass along the badly-needed info to us. Kirk, I think your prognostications are right on (that's Kirk Moulton of Broadwing SEPT, for those of you not on BirdHawk. Kirk's our BirdHawk prognosticator, who is getting pretty darn good at tracking and plotting the pathways of the migrating broadwings from the north; says we should be getting some good runs the next few days, from what he's seeing in the eastern flyway watches, along with reports now coming out from the central flyway via Duluth.). Our weekend should be very nice, if this keeps up.

Also, a south Texas welcome to Christine Tarski of the online Birding Internet Guide at Birding at About.com, who dropped by the hawk watch today to see controlled chaos in action!

Cheers,
