Hazel Bazemore Hawk Watch, Fall 1999
Date: 09-11-99
Greetings all:
Here's today's news from the hill:
------------------
Patty,
The best new bird wasn't a migrant, it's our old friend "Tex". We saw him
sitting down by the pond and got good looks in the scope. This Red-shouldered
Hawk, subspecies Texana, is one handsome bird!!! Hawks were flying in the
stratosphere, hard to find and hard to identify. Many complaints of headaches
and eye strain were the order of the day.
1 Osprey
19 Mississippi Kite
9 Broad-winged Hawk
3 Swainson's Hawk
1 American Kestrel
20 Unidentified Raptor
Total 53
Joel
I'm off to find the Advil and Visine.
------------------
"Tex" is our watch mascot, and the best hawk-spotter in the entire crew.
Each fall, he comes to spend the winter at Hazel Bazemore, and is the hawk watch
early warning system for hawk alerts. Even when the scopes can't find anything
in the sky, if we hear Tex screaming, we get the scopes and binos out and look
again. His alerts are always on target, and sometimes he'll even get airborne
and escort the passing hawks through the watch site (making real sure they know
whose territory it belongs to along the way!). Welcome back, Tex!
Cheers,
Patty Beasley
Joel Simon
Fernando Ramos
and the rest of the HBHW cast and crew
