Hazel Bazemore Hawk Watch, Fall 1999
Date:   08-18-99

Greetings all,

No rain today; but not much else apparently, according to Joel's report tonight:

------------------------

"A  s...l...o...w  day with only four migrating raptors.

The good numbers seen during the first four days of the watch really spoiled me. The day started out well with a low Harris' Hawk that finally found a thermal and headed to Kingsville and parts south (Kingsville is another great birding town that's south of us, on the route to the wintering grounds, for those not familiar with our watch area). The rest of the count included one Osprey, one Mississippi Kite, and one Swainson's Hawk.

About the only real excitement came when a large bird, streaming fast through a blue sky, showed a translucent white in the wings. Ferruginous Hawk came to mind until binos revealed legs...only a Great Egret."

Other birds were also very slow, below is a list:

Wood Storks (7)
Anhinga (1) it looked as if he were lost!
White Ibis (4)
Black-bellied Whistling Ducks (2)
Grooved-bill Ani
Kiskadee
Ladder-backed Woodpecker
Olive Sparrow
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
Cattle Egret
Orchard Oriole
Upland Sandpiper (but only a few)
Killdeer
Common Ground Dove
