Hazel Bazemore Hawk Watch
Corpus Christi, Texas (Nueces County)
08-17-99
Okay, it's definitely been a long day already! I'm sitting here wondering, an hour after I've posted the report, just when that darn post is going to appear on the newsgroups, only to find I went and sent it to myself! ... *sheesh!*
Hey, what was that stuff falling from the sky today? .... Rain? .... nah ....wet dust, I think! Joel says some of it hit the watch; just enough to turn a hot day into a sweltering sauna; yuck! Sounds like the local entertainment was the best.
Here's Joel's report from the hill:
------------------------------
Patty,
A couple of light showers were followed by bright sunlight and it produced
a sauna, wow, where else could you have such a steam bath, and for free.
Only two species on the count today: 36 Mississippi Kites and
3 Red-tailed Hawks, plus one unidentified raptor and one unidentified
buteo, a total of 41.
Very few dickie-birds today but the best was a kettle of 52 Wood Storks.
Other birds of note were 21 Anhingas, Groove-billed Ani, Common Nighthawk,
Buff-bellied Hummingbird, Yellow Warbler, Couch's Kingbird, and Orchard
Oriole.
The big highlight of the day was the resident White-tailed Hawk with prey
in its talons.
Joel

Cheers,
Patty
