Greetings! Joel says Lots of B L U E sky today, tough hawk watching conditions. Thanks to the good eyes of David Olovsky we added two more Swallow-tails, the first Doris Harmonson had ever seen at the hawk watch. It's always fun to see the long-termers finally get a new bird. Doris has been taking part in the hawkwatch for nearly a decade. Way to go, Doris!

Broadies and Swainson's are running neck and neck.

Oh, a revision to yesterday's numbers for us number-crunchers: Mississippi kites should have read 208 instead of 210. My fault; brain surge. Totals have been adjusted as needed on the web page archives.

Species              Day     Season
Osprey                1         3
Swallow-tailed Kite   2         5
Mississippi Kite      105       1566
Cooper's Hawk         1         2
Red-shouldered Hawk   1         9
Broad-winged Hawk     37        46
Swainson's Hawk       5         40
White-tailed Hawk     0         1
Red-tailed Hawk       1         21
American Kestrel      0         2
Unidentified Raptors  0         12
Total                 153       1707

Non-raptor Species Day List
Date:   August 27, 1998

Hi everyone! Well, those swallow-tailed kites continue to come through
Hazel's Hawk Watch. I tell you, this time of year, it gets harder and
harder each year to get up and go to the daily grind that pays the bills,
and miss all these wonderful migrants! Fortunately, a few more folks are
getting out to the watch to see them (and, more importantly, to help keep
the full-time counters company)!

Glenn's changed up the database to eliminate those question marks (we just
wanted to see who was actually reading these lists, ha!). If the bird is
listed, it was seen. Numbers aren't kept for each species unless notable
(or unless the counter wants to!).

Migrants continue to come in and mix with the diverse residents; there's
always something to see at Hazel.

Enjoy!

-- Patty
