VERY Blustery day; north winds blew tops off the hills and kept
counters hunkered down in vehicles against the cold. Migrating raptors
were kept to a minimum. So much so that Joel recorded 137 turkey vultures
going the WRONG way, heading NORTH instead of south. Scratch those from
the totals, says Joel; they'll go back on again if they pass him going
the right direction next time!
Congratulations to Smith Point for posting their eagles, and some really interesting counts for this weekend!
Quickie note unrelated to hawk watch; the green-breasted mango appears to have better sense than the vultures, and headed south. Not seen at the Simon's house all day Sunday (11/09) or Monday (11/10); the stakeout has been officially called off.
One more quickie non-hawk watch note: 145 whooping cranes
(including 6 chicks) now arrived at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge,
