Fickle weather; no hawks recorded during last three and a half
hours of the watch today. Monarch butterflies liked it just fine, though,
thank you very much (radar watchers, take note)!
Counters stood a monarch butterfly watch today. Morning brought
an 8:30 a.m. liftoff of between 2,000-3,000 monarchs. Official counter
Joel Simon described one small scrub brush tree near the hawk watch site
as having over 50 monarchs hanging among its branches (must've looked like
ornaments on a south Texas Christmas tree!). Throughout the rest of the
watch day, more than 15,000 monarchs passed overhead in a steady continuous
stream.
